Common Window Installation Problems

Inexperienced Contractors

Most window installation problems can be summarized into one problem – inexperienced contractors who cut corners. Shoddy contractors solely interested in doing quick installations, getting the project done at a certain price point to maximize profit and getting 'in and out' as quickly as possible are to blame for most installation problems.

While shoddy contractors appear attractive because of their unusually low pricing, they end up costing their clients more. For instance, poor window waterproofing may attract additional repair or remodeling costs in the future. A seemingly good installation can be the cause of mold and other water damage problems in your home when a bad weather season or storm hits.

Poor Window Recommendations

Storms in Texas often originate from a certain direction. You need a company that recommends replacement windows capable of withstanding the storm lashing without allowing water into your home. Andersen Windows also carries impact resistant glass. Preview Construction chooses windows based on many factors including how they will protect your home and where they will be installed (south, east, north or west).

Inability to Preempt Issues

Unlike inexperienced contractors who are caught unawares, Preview Construction preempts issues. Our experienced window installers do comprehensive site visits noting down every single detail. You can be assured the windows will fit perfectly and any required modifications are planned for.

Preview Construction finds out whatever has to be done ahead of time and talks you through the available options. If we have to repair the sheetrock after window installation, cut the stone/brick or install the windows from the inside, we will know this and plan accordingly beforehand.

Overlooking Industry Best Practices

Inexperienced contractors are also guilty of bad practices. Preview Constructions follows best practices to the letter ensuring every single installation job is done right! You can rest assured your structural integrity will be intact, and you’ll avoid other common problems like window movement, messy caulking, window opening/closing problems, drafts and water damage, uneven windows, increased energy consumption, and more!

Replacement Windows

Replacement windows replace existing windows in homes.

A lot of our customers have a vision for their home and we work with them to find just the right windows to match their vision. It’s why we offer the option to schedule a free consultation with us as an educational component to your window replacement journey.

Of course, many people contact us to replace existing windows that are old, damaged, malfunctioning (energy-inefficient), or offer poor lighting, and replacement windows are a perfect solution to remedy the issues and beautify your home at the same time.

Windows, doors, and siding are our specialty so we can make openings larger, schedule sub-contractors to move electrical outlets, create the ‘big door’ look with windows and a nice size patio style door. The ‘big door’ look can save around $10,000 off a typical big door installation, making it a popular choice — especially in our climate.

Taking Over From Another Contractor

If you hire a contractor to install replacement windows or new windows and they don’t get the job done right, you can call Preview Construction.

We’ve taken over from other contractors before after they failed to get something right. We can correct window installation mistakes, recommend and install replacement windows, source and install more energy-efficient windows and more. Talk to us if you are concerned!

Warranties can be rendered void by a manufacturer if the installation isn’t done properly. Installation issues like using the wrong flashing tape can get your warranty voided. Shoddy contractors known for their low pricing can appear to offer the same product installation. However, you may be getting a substandard installation. By working with Preview Construction, you can rest assured of a valid lifetime limited warranty which generally lasts for 20-years.

g. Unmatched support: Preview Construction has window installation experts on call during regular business hours. Projects are also overseen by project managers to the end. What's more, clients get clear and regular communication on the progress of a project, process, and timelines.

Large casement windows in a Texas home.

Preview Construction has crafted a seamless process that ensures clients have a great experience from the enquiry stage to the results. The process begins with a comprehensive consultation process. This is followed by a comprehensive quote and follow-up process that leaves almost all questions answered.

When you express interest in Preview Construction, you are bound to talk with Jason who loves talking about windows, doors, siding, name it. Jason educates clients and helps them choose the best options — from looks to functionality.

He understands how the whole home functions and takes that into consideration when planning jobs. Jason will do initial measurements and examine what might interfere with an installation project, preempting issues other contractors would easily overlook. If he finds possible roadblocks, he will discuss them with clients ahead of time.

Jason considers whether a window will be installed on the side of the house that will get battered by high winds, and driving rain. In those situations, he will recommend certain window solutions. If replacement windows are getting installed in a sheltered area, perhaps under a large, protected overhang from the house, he will have other options.

Preview Construction works as a team. Jason does measurements but when a customer wants to proceed, a project manager will double and triple check Jason's work. Unlike most competitors, Jason's entire life revolved around construction. The big-box store might send you a person who has been through two weeks of training. Preview Construction lets you deal with the true experts only with decades of first-hand experience.

Window Types

When you choose Preview Construction's replacement window installation service, there are many window options to consider.

They include, but aren't limited to;

Awning Windows

Awning window.

Awnings are different from regular windows by their opening mechanism - opened outwards from the bottom. This offers ventilation benefits and protection from the rain. They can also be differentiated by their location - often installed higher on walls for added privacy. Awning windows can also be installed alongside large stationary windows to offer better views.

These windows feature a cozy nook with multiple windows (three or more). They are popular in living spaces and bedrooms and feature an outward angle beyond the wall, creating extra space.

Window Material

Vinyl Replacement Windows

Preview Construction offers Andersen Vinyl replacement windows that offer benefits such as improved energy efficiency since vinyl offers superior thermal protection compared to other window materials like aluminum or wood.

Vinyl also won’t stain, require paint or other maintenance related to peeling, warping, and cracking. The durable thermal windows are also affordable and stylish.

Main Vinyl Window Pros

  • Affordable: Cheaper than most window types.
  • Fewer maintenance needs: They don’t rust or scratch. Need less challenging cleaning to keep them looking great.
  • Variety: There are many vinyl window options available today.

Main Vinyl Window Cons

  • Temperature sensitive: Vinyl windows are sensitive to high/extreme temperature. Can expand/contract when exposed to extreme temperatures interfering with opening/closing mechanisms. When you close your windows, remember to secure them with the locking mechanism to avoid warping.
  • Poor insulation: There are better window types if insulating your home is of utmost importance.
  • Durability issues: Vinyl windows aren’t as durable as other windows i.e., aluminum windows. What’s more, there are many types which tend to vary in quality.
  • Smaller views: Vinyl windows aren’t as strong so the framing and mullions (a vertical bar between the panes of glass in a window) are quite wide, reducing the viewable area out of your window.

Aluminum Replacement Windows

We install Andersen aluminum replacement windows for homeowners looking for virtually maintenance-free windows that won’t rust, rot, corrode, swell or crack. Aluminum replacement windows also have an unmatched aesthetic appeal.

Main Pros of Aluminum Windows

  • Better views: Strong allowing for narrow framing and narrower mullions which offer a larger viewable area out of your window.
  • Strong and Lightweight: Aluminum combines strength and lightweight features. Aluminum will last for decades and handle the weight and environmental forces perfectly.
  • Variety: There are many aluminum window styles and colors on sale today.
  • Better maintenance: Aluminum windows are easier to maintain than wooden windows. Special finishes i.e., anodized or baked-on finishing eliminate the need to repaint the windows.

Main Cons of Aluminum Windows

  • Cost: Aluminum windows cost more than some common window options like vinyl.
  • Select Appeal: Aluminum windows may not work well in areas prone to extreme winter.
  • Prone to corrosion: When exposed to salt in moist air or water, the windows are bound to corrode.
Floor to ceiling windows.

Composite Windows

Preview construction also installs Andersen composite replacement windows that come with notable benefits like cost-effectiveness, energy-efficient, unmatched durability and style (multiple colors and finishes).

Main Pros of Composite Windows

  • More Durable: Composite windows last longer than vinyl and uPVC windows.
  • Superior energy efficiency: The windows insulate the home better, reducing cooling and heating bills.
  • Durable: Their material mix results in stronger windows less vulnerable to impact and strong weather elements.
  • Variety: Composite windows come in countless styles, colors and variations.

Main Cons of Composite Windows

  • Cost: Composite windows cost more than vinyl replacement windows.
  • Environmental concerns: Composite windows aren’t the most environmentally friendly in regards to the manufacturing process.

FAQs

  • Should you replace all your windows at once?

Should You Replace All Windows all at once?

It depends. If you have the budget, getting siding, windows, and doors done at the same time prevents any re-work.

However, you don't have to get the work done at once. We have ideas and solutions if you want to do your home renovation in phases. We will also recommend which order you tackle your siding, window, or door replacement for the best results.

We recommend replacing your windows, doors or siding in phases provided you choose nationally recognised brands such as Andersen, Windsor, Marvin, Jeldwen and Pella that are bound to be around for a long time. If you fail to make this consideration, you can end up with mismatched windows or face additional costs of doing a total window replacement.

What’s more, sometimes the solution isn’t replacing all the windows. If you wish to replace your windows because of waterproofing issues, Preview Construction has waterproofing solutions. We can get the waterproofing done correctly (behind the siding). In such cases, the siding gets installed over the top without the need to do any rework.

If cost is inhibiting, Preview Construction can arrange financing for clients who would want to replace all windows.

  • When should you consider replacing windows?

    When Should You Replace Windows?

Generally, windows will last for 15 – 20 years, so you shouldn't be thinking about replacing them for a decade or two. However, if they show noticeable damage like rot, peeling, or poor energy efficiency before 15 to 20 years are over, you can consider replacing them.

Safety issues such as difficulty opening/closing, loose-fitting or similar issues common in older homes should also warrant a replacement. A window that doesn’t open/close easily can be a hazard in a fire. Other signs that warrant replacement include high energy bills or a really poor initial installation that needs to be redone.

A typical example would be a loose-fitting window that would easily topple or cause a catastrophic fall if leaned on. Improperly installed windows need immediate attention. In one home we found a window nailed into the exterior siding and not secured at all!

And of course, many customers have a vision for their home and they are looking to replace the windows to update the look and feel of a home.

Preview Construction works with many homeowners with unique visions of how their windows/home should look and function.

  • What window materials can you trust?

What Window Materials Can You Trust?

Different window materials can work perfectly, provided they are from a reputable window manufacturer like Andersen with over 115 years of experience. We sell and install windows from other major manufacturers like; Pella, Marvin, Windsor, and Jeld-Wen.
